How to Cloak Affiliate Links (No Website Needed)

If you are pushing Shopee, Flipkart or Amazon deals from your Instagram bio in India or Indonesia, you already know the problem: your affiliate URL looks like a ransom note. A string of ?af_siteid=, &sub_id=, utm_source and a random 40-character hash is enough to make a first-time buyer freeze. This guide shows you how to fix that in minutes, without owning a website, and how to stay on the right side of every network's rules while you do it. No WordPress. No plugin. No hosting bill.

Link cloaking is simpler than the name suggests. It means taking a long, ugly affiliate link and routing it through a short, clean, branded link that you control. The visitor clicks your tidy link, an invisible redirect fires in a fraction of a second, and they land on the merchant page with your affiliate tag intact, so the network can credit the click, as long as its terms allow short links (see below). They see a link they trust.

Cloaking vs shortening vs masking

People use three words for overlapping ideas, so let us pin them down:

• Shortening shrinks a long URL into a compact one (the classic job of a URL shortener).
• Branding puts your own name in that short link instead of a generic domain, so it reads as yourname.link/sale rather than bit.ly/3xKp9.
• Cloaking hides the raw destination behind that clean link, and (in its strongest form, full-mask cloaking) keeps your branded URL showing in the address bar even after the page loads.

Most affiliate marketers want all three at once: a short, branded, cloaked link. The good news is that a modern shortener bundles them together, so you are really just pasting a URL and copying a cleaner one back out.

This is not cosmetic. The shape of a link changes whether people click it. Branded links draw more clicks than generic short URLs. The reason is boringly human: people click names they recognize and hesitate on strings they do not.

Raw affiliate URLs work against you in four ways:

• They look like spam, so cautious buyers assume a scam and scroll past.
• They expose your affiliate tag, which some shoppers strip out (killing your commission) and some competitors copy.
• They break on paste into WhatsApp, Telegram and Instagram captions, where a 200-character URL wraps and mangles.
• They are impossible to remember or say out loud, so you can never mention them in a Reel or a story.

A clean branded link is the cheapest trust signal you will ever buy. It costs nothing to make and it does the quiet work of telling a stranger "this is safe to tap."

Trust is the whole game for social sellers

When your entire storefront is a single line in an Instagram bio or a WhatsApp broadcast, the link is your brand. A cloaked link like flyn.to/diwali tells a buyer you are a real operator, not a random account dropping affiliate spam. That is also why we wrote a deeper piece on why branded short links increase CTR and how custom domains build trust. The mechanism is always the same: recognizable link, lower hesitation, more clicks.

Under the hood, a Flyn short link answers with a 302 (temporary) redirect, the kind that lets you change the destination later (links with retargeting pixels pass through a short interstitial page instead). Here is the full journey of a single click, start to finish.

1. A buyer taps your branded link, for example flyn.to/maya-deal.
2. The request hits your short domain, which looks up where that slug should go.
3. The server returns a redirect pointing at your hidden affiliate URL, tag and all.
4. The buyer's browser follows it and lands on the merchant product page, where the network sets your affiliate cookie. Whether that click can earn a commission depends on the network's rules, covered below.

All of that happens in well under a second, and the visitor typically never reads the long URL. With standard cloaking the address bar updates to the merchant domain after the jump. With full-mask cloaking, a Pro setting in Flyn's link cloaking feature, the destination loads inside a frame, so your short URL stays in the address bar. Many stores refuse to be framed (Amazon and Shopee both do); Flyn checks for this and falls back to a normal redirect when the store's headers say so. Full mask hides the destination from the address bar, not from the page source, and several networks rule out framed affiliate links, so for affiliate links a plain redirect is the safe choice.

What you gain besides good looks

Because every click passes through your own link first, you get to measure it. That is the part raw affiliate URLs can never give you. With a real shortener you unlock:

• Click analytics: how many taps each link gets on every plan, and on Pro, which country, city and device they came from, via Flyn's click analytics.
• Editable destinations: swap a sold-out product for a live one without changing the link you already posted.
• Retargeting (Pro): fire a Meta, Google or TikTok pixel on the click so you can advertise to those shoppers later, using retargeting pixels. Here is the part most "how to cloak affiliate links" articles skip, and it is the part that can save your account. Not every affiliate program allows a short link, and two of the biggest names for Indian sellers are the ones to be most careful with. We read each network's own terms in September 2026 and quote them below. Where a network says nothing, we say so instead of guessing, because silence is not permission.

Amazon Associates: shorteners are restricted, and redirected clicks can cost you the commission

Amazon does not ban link shorteners outright. Its Associates Program Policies say: "You will not use a link shortening service, button, hyperlink or other ad placement in a manner that makes it unclear that you are linking to an Amazon Site." The catch is commission. The same page excludes "any Product purchased by a customer who is referred to an Amazon Site by a link that sends users indirectly to an Amazon Site via an intermediate site, without requiring the customer to click on a link or take some other affirmative action on that intermediate site", which Amazon calls a "Redirecting Link". A plain redirect from Flyn or any other third-party shortener fits that definition on a plain reading, so your tag can reach Amazon intact and the sale can still earn nothing.

Two more rules sit on that page. Amazon's cloaking rule is about the site the click came from: "You will not cloak, hide, spoof, or otherwise obscure the URL of your Site containing Special Links (including by use of Redirecting Links)". And "You will not frame an Amazon Site, or any part of it, within your Site", so full-mask cloaking is out.

Amazon.in words it a little differently. Its Linking Requirements carry an equivalent shortener rule, its Participation Requirements ban framing and bar obscuring your site's URL "(including by use of a redirecting page)", and its Operating Agreement words the Redirecting Link fee exclusion around links shown on a search engine. None of that makes a shortener safe, so the advice is the same in both countries.

Flipkart Affiliate: share the link Flipkart gives you

Flipkart's affiliate terms list the sites it treats as unsuitable, including those that "Use links or URLs which are not published by the Flipkart Site or by Flipkart Affiliate Program." A branded short link is a URL Flipkart did not publish, so on a plain reading it falls on the wrong side of that line. The same terms rule out "framing", and Flipkart says it may "withhold any fees payable to you under this Agreement, terminate this Agreement, or both" when a requirement is broken. If you promote Flipkart, share the link Flipkart gives you.

Shopee Affiliate: documented, as a plain redirect

Shopee is the one marketplace here that documents using any third-party shortener, not just an approved list. Its help centre tells affiliates "you can wrap your links with a link-shortener", and its Malaysian short-link guide says to paste the completed tracking link "into a third-party link-shortening platform" to create "a cleaner and shareable URL." Keep it a plain redirect, though: Shopee's affiliate terms prohibit "iFrames", so full mask is out. Indonesian sellers should read one more clause: Shopee Indonesia's affiliate terms list "masking" and "penggunaan fitur custom link" (use of a custom link feature) among the promotion methods they ban when used to mislead users. The terms also say affiliate links should not be altered or modified without Shopee's prior written consent, and the guide does not say it counts as that consent, so if you want certainty, ask Shopee.

Programs that encourage it, and programs that rule it out

• Rakuten Advertising encourages it: its help centre says "You can now copy this URL into the link shortener of your choice." Rakuten is moving its advertisers to impact.com in waves; once a brand has moved, new links for it come from impact.com.
• ClickBank allows it as a redirect. Its HopLinks guide answers "Can I use tools to shorten or cloak a HopLink?" with "Yes", but calls HopLinks opened in "frames, iframes, layers, applets, or images" invalid.
• Mercado Libre Afiliados rules it out: "El Afiliado no podrá utilizar ningún servicio de corte “shorteners”" (the affiliate may not use any shortener service).
• eBay Partner Network permits its own ebay.us plus a short list of named third-party shorteners, which it says "are the only ones that are permitted to be used for EPN links". Flyn is not on that list, so use ebay.us for eBay links, or ask EPN first: it says it will evaluate requests to use another shortener.
• Cuelinks, on its Amazon India campaign, says "any use of tiny URLs or change in format in any form using external tools for affiliate links is prohibited" and points you to its own short links instead.

Programs whose terms say nothing about shorteners

CJ, Impact, Awin (which now includes former ShareASale publishers), Admitad and Allegro have no shortener rule in their public terms. That is not a yes. CJ's Publisher Service Agreement and Impact's campaign agreement both list "Iframes" and "hidden frames" among bad-faith methods, and Impact's partner terms limit you to methods the advertiser approves. Lazada's terms ask you to use affiliate links "without modification" and ban iFrames, and we found no rule either way for TikTok Shop affiliate links. For all of these, ask your network or the brand before you shorten, keep the link a plain redirect, and preserve your sub-IDs.

Every guide on the first page of Google assumes you own a WordPress site and will install PrettyLinks or ThirstyAffiliates. If you are a social seller running your whole business from a phone, that advice is useless. You do not need a site, a plugin, hosting, or a developer. You need a shortener that cloaks. Add your own domain when you are ready

The single biggest upgrade is a custom domain. Instead of a shared short domain, you route links through something like yourname.link, which pushes trust and recall even higher. Flyn's custom domains come with automatic SSL, and you can attach up to three of them on Pro. Pair that with branded short links and every link you post carries your name, not a stranger's.

Social selling has its own rules of physics. Platforms restrict where clickable links live, captions mangle long URLs, and buyers are one wince away from bouncing. Cloaked branded links solve all three.

Instagram: one clean link that does the work

Instagram gives you a precious few clickable slots: the bio, and links in Stories. Do not waste them on a raw affiliate string. Put a single clean cloaked link in your bio, and because you control the destination, you can point that same link at whatever deal is live this week without ever editing your profile. WhatsApp and Telegram: links that survive the paste

On WhatsApp broadcasts and Telegram channels, a 200-character affiliate URL wraps across lines and often breaks the tap target entirely. A short cloaked link pastes clean, previews nicely, and is easy to forward. Use the WhatsApp link shortener and Telegram link shortener to keep every drop tidy. Make one link per channel and you can see which channel drives the clicks, even on the free plan; match those clicks against your network's sales report to see which one converts.

Route by country and device when it matters

If you sell across Singapore and Malaysia, the same product often lives on different regional store pages. Smart routing, a Pro feature, lets one link send Singaporean shoppers to your Shopee SG link and Malaysian shoppers to your Shopee MY link automatically. That is the topic of what smart links are, and it turns a single cloaked link into a country-aware storefront.

There is one more distinction that trips people up, because the word "cloaking" means two very different things depending on who is saying it.

The affiliate meaning vs the SEO meaning

Affiliate cloaking is what this whole guide describes: routing a real human through a branded redirect to a real destination. Everyone, bot or human, ends up in the same place. That is honest, though whether a given program allows it is a separate question, answered in the table above.

Deceptive cloaking is an SEO black-hat technique where you show search engine crawlers one page and human visitors a completely different one. Google's spam policies explicitly forbid this, and it can get a whole site deindexed. Branded affiliate redirects are not that, as long as you are not serving different content to bots and people.

Disclosure is not optional

Beyond Google, the FTC in the US and advertising rules in many other countries require you to disclose affiliate relationships. Cloaking a link never removes that duty. A short #ad or a one-line "I earn a commission" note next to your link keeps you compliant and, counterintuitively, tends to raise trust rather than lower it. Honest sellers convert better over time.

• Do: brand, shorten and cloak links on networks that allow it.
• Do: disclose the affiliate relationship every time.
• Do not: put Amazon, Flipkart or Mercado Libre affiliate links behind a third-party shortener, frame any store's page, or feed bots and humans different pages.

Once cloaking is second nature, a few Pro features turn a clean link into a real asset. None of them require a website either.

Full-mask cloaking, and when not to use it

Full-mask cloaking loads the destination inside a frame so your short URL stays in the address bar. It lives in Flyn's link cloaking feature on Pro, which is unlimited links at $9/month billed annually ($12 month to month). Use it for your own pages or for partners that confirm framing is fine, not for affiliate links: Amazon, Flipkart, Shopee, Lazada, Mercado Libre and ClickBank all rule out framing in their terms. And every Flyn short link, on every plan, already tells search engines not to index it, so there is nothing extra to switch on for that.

Password links and built-in safety

On Pro you can also gate a link behind a password for private deal drops to a paid group. And on every plan, free included, each link is checked against Google Safe Browsing threat lists when you create or edit it and re-checked periodically after that, so a compromised merchant link can be caught and switched off. That protects your reputation, which matters enormously when your links spread through WhatsApp forwards. 4. Watch click analytics to see which channel and country clicks most (the country breakdown is Pro), then compare with your network's sales report.
