How to Cloak Affiliate Links (No Website Needed)

The Mechanics: How a Cloaked Redirect Actually Flows

Under the hood, a cloaked affiliate link is just a well-behaved 301 or 302 redirect. Here is the full journey of a single click, start to finish.

  1. A buyer taps your branded link, for example flyn.to/deal.
  2. The request hits your short domain, which looks up where that slug should go.
  3. The server returns a redirect pointing at your hidden affiliate URL, tag and all.
  4. The buyer's browser follows it and lands on the merchant product page, where your affiliate cookie is set and your commission is tracked.

All of that happens in well under a second, and the visitor typically never reads the long URL. With standard cloaking the address bar updates to the merchant domain after the jump. With full-mask cloaking, your branded URL stays visible in the address bar while the merchant page loads inside, so the affiliate string never shows at all. Full-mask is a Pro capability in Flyn's link cloaking feature and is the strongest way to keep a link clean end to end.

The click path: your branded short domain quietly forwards to the hidden affiliate URL, then to the merchant.

What you gain besides good looks

Because every click passes through your own link first, you get to measure it. That is the part raw affiliate URLs can never give you. With a real shortener you unlock:

  • Click analytics: how many taps, from which country and device, via Flyn's click analytics.
  • Editable destinations: swap a sold-out product for a live one without changing the link you already posted.
  • Retargeting: fire a Meta, Google or TikTok pixel on the click so you can advertise to those shoppers later, using retargeting pixels. We cover the strategy in retargeting affiliate link clicks.

For a full walkthrough of measuring performance, see our affiliate link tracking guide. Cloaking and tracking are two sides of the same clean link.

The Honesty Rule: Which Networks Allow Cloaking (and Which Ban It)

Here is the part most "how to cloak affiliate links" articles skip, and it is the part that can save your account. Not every affiliate network allows cloaking. The biggest exception is the one everyone uses.

Amazon Associates prohibits cloaking, full stop

Amazon Associates explicitly bans cloaking and masking of Amazon affiliate links. The Associates Program Operating Agreement forbids you from cloaking, hiding, spoofing or otherwise obscuring the URL of your Amazon Special Links, and separately bans using a link-shortening service in any way that makes it unclear you are linking to Amazon. Break this and Amazon can terminate your account and withhold unpaid earnings. This is not a grey area or an urban legend; it is written policy.

Watch out

Do not cloak or mask Amazon affiliate links with a custom domain or full-mask redirect. If you must shorten an Amazon link, use Amazon's own amzn.to shortener, or a plain link where it is obvious the destination is Amazon, and keep your disclosure visible. Our Amazon link tool is for tidy, non-obscuring links, not for hiding that a link goes to Amazon.

Shopee, Flipkart and most networks are fine with branded redirects

Most other programs, including Shopee Affiliate, Flipkart Affiliate, and the majority of networks running on Impact, CJ, Admitad or in-house systems, permit branded redirects as long as your affiliate parameters survive the jump and you disclose the relationship. That is exactly what a clean cloaked link does. Always skim your specific program's terms first, because rules change, but the split below is the reliable starting point.

Cloaking for Instagram, WhatsApp and Telegram Sellers

Social selling has its own rules of physics. Platforms restrict where clickable links live, captions mangle long URLs, and buyers are one wince away from bouncing. Cloaked branded links solve all three.

Instagram gives you a precious few clickable slots: the bio, and links in Stories. Do not waste them on a raw affiliate string. Put a single clean cloaked link in your bio, and because you control the destination, you can point that same link at whatever deal is live this week without ever editing your profile. We break the tactics down in optimizing your Instagram bio link and the broader link-in-bio strategy for creators.

One clean, branded link in the bio reads as a real storefront, not affiliate spam.

On WhatsApp broadcasts and Telegram channels, a 200-character affiliate URL wraps across lines and often breaks the tap target entirely. A short cloaked link pastes clean, previews nicely, and is easy to forward. Use the WhatsApp link shortener and Telegram link shortener to keep every drop tidy. Since every click routes through your link first, you can also see which channel actually converts, which is impossible with bare affiliate URLs.

Route by country and device when it matters

If you sell across India and Indonesia, the same product often lives on different regional store pages. Smart routing lets one link send Indian traffic to the Flipkart page and Indonesian traffic to the Shopee ID page automatically. That is the topic of what smart links are, and it turns a single cloaked link into a country-aware storefront.

Honest Cloaking vs Deceptive Cloaking: Stay On Google's Good Side

There is one more distinction that trips people up, because the word "cloaking" means two very different things depending on who is saying it.

The affiliate meaning vs the SEO meaning

Affiliate cloaking is what this whole guide describes: routing a real human through a branded redirect to a real destination. Everyone, bot or human, ends up in the same place. That is honest and allowed on most networks.

Deceptive cloaking is an SEO black-hat technique where you show search engine crawlers one page and human visitors a completely different one. Google's Webmaster Guidelines explicitly forbid this, and it can get a whole site deindexed. Branded affiliate redirects are not that, as long as you are not serving different content to bots and people.

Keep it clean

Two habits keep you safe: never show crawlers a different destination than humans, and add rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow" plus a visible disclosure wherever you place affiliate links on a page you own. Our guide on disclosing affiliate links with the sponsored rel attribute walks through the exact markup.

Disclosure is not optional

Beyond Google, the FTC in the US and equivalent bodies in India and Indonesia require you to disclose affiliate relationships. Cloaking a link never removes that duty. A short #ad or a one-line "I earn a commission" note next to your link keeps you compliant and, counterintuitively, tends to raise trust rather than lower it. Honest sellers convert better over time.

  • Do: brand, shorten and cloak links on networks that allow it.
  • Do: disclose the affiliate relationship every time.
  • Do not: cloak Amazon links, or feed bots and humans different pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cloak affiliate links without a website?
Yes, and it is the whole point of this guide. Almost every tutorial assumes you run WordPress and will install PrettyLinks or ThirstyAffiliates, but you do not need any of that. A hosted link cloaker does the redirect for you in the cloud, so all you do is paste your raw affiliate URL, pick a slug, and copy the clean branded link back out. You can do it entirely from a phone. With Flyn's free link cloaker you can even create cloaked links without an account first, then claim them later by signing up. No hosting, no plugin, no developer, and no monthly website bill required to get a clean, branded, trackable affiliate link.
Is cloaking Amazon affiliate links against the rules?
Yes. Amazon Associates explicitly prohibits cloaking, masking, or otherwise obscuring the URL of your Amazon Special Links, and it separately bans using any link-shortening service in a way that hides that the link goes to Amazon. Violating this can get your Associates account terminated and your unpaid commissions withheld, so it is genuinely risky. If you want a shorter Amazon link, use Amazon's own amzn.to shortener or a plain link where it is obvious the destination is Amazon, and always keep your affiliate disclosure visible. This ban is specific to Amazon. Most other networks, including Shopee and Flipkart, do allow honest branded redirects as long as your tracking parameters survive.
Do Shopee and Flipkart allow branded link cloaking?
In general, yes. Shopee Affiliate and Flipkart Affiliate both permit branded redirects as long as your affiliate tracking parameters pass through to the final product page and you disclose the relationship. That is exactly what a proper cloaked link does: it forwards the click through your clean short link to the merchant with your tag intact. This is very different from Amazon, which forbids the practice. That said, program terms can change, so read your specific network's agreement before you scale. As a rule of thumb, if a network only cares that the tracking survives and you stay honest, branded cloaking is fine. Use the Flipkart shortener or link cloaker to keep those links clean.
Will cloaking a link hurt my SEO or Google ranking?
Honest branded redirects will not. The word cloaking causes confusion because it means two things. Affiliate cloaking, routing a real human through a branded redirect to a real destination, is fine. Deceptive SEO cloaking, showing search engine crawlers one page and human visitors a different page, violates Google's Webmaster Guidelines and can get a site deindexed. As long as bots and humans reach the same destination, you are doing the honest kind. On pages you own, add rel=sponsored or rel=nofollow to affiliate links and include a visible disclosure. That keeps you compliant with both Google and advertising regulators while still enjoying clean, branded links.
What is the difference between link cloaking and link shortening?
Shortening simply makes a long URL compact. Cloaking goes further: it hides the raw affiliate destination behind a clean link you control, and in its strongest form, full-mask cloaking, it keeps your branded URL showing in the address bar even after the merchant page loads. Branding is the third piece, putting your own name or domain in the link instead of a generic one. Most affiliate marketers want all three together: a short, branded, cloaked link like yourname.link/deal. A modern shortener bundles them, so you paste one URL and copy a cleaner one. Flyn does shortening, branding, and cloaking in a single step, with full-mask available on the Pro plan.
How do I put a clean affiliate link in my Instagram bio?
Instagram only gives you a few clickable spots, mainly the bio and Story links, so make them count. Do not paste a raw affiliate URL full of tracking parameters, which reads as spam and mangles on display. Instead, cloak the link first: paste your affiliate URL into a link cloaker, pick a memorable slug, and drop the resulting clean branded link into your bio. Because you control the destination, you can repoint that same bio link at whichever deal is live this week without ever editing your profile. Add a custom domain on Pro so the link carries your own name. The Instagram link shortener and our Instagram bio link guide cover the exact workflow.
Can people still see the real affiliate URL behind a cloaked link?
With standard cloaking, the address bar updates to the merchant domain after the redirect fires, so a curious user could see the final destination but usually never reads the long parameter string, since the jump takes a fraction of a second. With full-mask cloaking, a Pro feature, your branded URL stays in the address bar while the merchant page loads inside, so the affiliate string is never exposed at all. Either way, the point is not to deceive; it is to present a clean, trustworthy link. Just remember that full-mask cloaking is not allowed for Amazon links, and you should still disclose the affiliate relationship regardless of which style you use.
Does cloaking affiliate links let me track clicks?
Yes, and this is one of the biggest advantages over posting raw affiliate URLs. Because every visitor passes through your own short link before reaching the merchant, you can measure the traffic. A good shortener shows you total clicks, and on richer plans the country, device, browser and referrer behind them. You can also swap a sold-out product for a live one without changing the link you already posted, and fire retargeting pixels so you can advertise to those shoppers later. Raw affiliate links give you none of this. Flyn provides basic click analytics free and city-level geo, device and referrer analytics on Pro.
