What Is a Messenger (m.me) Link?

A Messenger link is a short URL in the form https://m.me/<your-page> that opens a chat with your Facebook Page, directly in the Messenger app on mobile, or messenger.com on desktop. One tap, conversation started.

The optional ?ref= parameter passes through to your Messenger webhook so you (or your bot) can see which placement started the chat, your homepage hero, the email footer, the printed QR. Without ref tags you cannot attribute a single conversation.

A complete Messenger link:

https://m.me/acme.coffee?ref=footer-cta&text=Hi%21+I%27d+like+to+know+more+about+your+launch

Where to Put Your Messenger Link

The link only starts conversations where customers actually see it. These are the highest-converting placements, and the ones worth tracking separately with a unique ref tag or short link.

PlacementWhy it converts
Website header / floating buttonThe single highest-intent placement, visitors with a question and no obvious answer click here first instead of bouncing.
Email signatureEvery customer email becomes a passive Messenger CTA. Zero extra effort, compounding reach over months.
Instagram bio linkInstagram DMs route to a separate Meta inbox; m.me in bio funnels serious inquiries into your unified Facebook Page Inbox.
Google My Business profileA m.me link in your GMB profile lets local searchers ping you instantly, often faster than a phone call.
Printed flyers & business cards (as QR)Generate a QR pointing at your m.me link, physical visitors scan, chat opens, you are talking inside 5 seconds.
Facebook & Instagram adsClick-to-Messenger ads use m.me natively, passes the ref tag automatically so you can attribute conversations to the exact ad creative.

Pro tip

Use a different Flyn short link for each placement (one for the footer, one for the email signature, one for the GMB profile, one for the Instagram bio). Same m.me destination, separate click counts. That is the difference between knowing what drives chats and guessing.

Messenger Link Best Practices

Do

Don't

Use a ref tag per placement

Use the bare m.me link everywhere and guess

Set a Page greeting + auto-reply

Leave first-message visitors waiting in silence

Reply within 1 hour to earn the green badge

Let response time slip, Page shows "typically replies in days"

Add m.me to GMB + Instagram bio + email sig

Hide it on a contact page nobody finds

Use a Flyn short link per channel for analytics

Hardcode m.me/yourpage and lose attribution

Test the link in incognito on mobile

Ship a typo and watch the conversations evaporate

Turn Messenger Clicks Into Real Attribution

See what starts chats

Track clicks by channel, website vs email vs Instagram bio, so you know which placement actually drives Messenger conversations.

Branded & memorable

Turn the m.me URL into go.yourbrand.com/chat, clean enough for a printed flyer, an email, or a one-line tweet.

Edit the destination

If you change your Page username or switch to a different chat channel, edit the Flyn link once, every placement keeps working (Pro).

A/B test placements

Split-test "Chat with us" vs "Ask a question" across the website and emails, see which copy actually earns conversations (Pro).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Messenger (m.me) link?
A Messenger link is a short URL in the form https://m.me/<your-page> that opens a chat with your Facebook Page, in the Messenger app on mobile, or messenger.com on desktop. It is the cleanest way to send a visitor from a website, email, SMS, ad, or QR code directly into a one-to-one conversation with your business.
What do I put for the "Facebook Page username"?
Your Page username is the handle in your Page's public URL, facebook.com/<your-page>. If your Page URL is facebook.com/acme.coffee then your username is acme.coffee (do not include the @). If your Page does not have a custom username yet, you can use the numeric Page ID instead, m.me/123456789012345 also works. Find both on your Page under Settings → Page Info.
How does the ref tag work?
When someone opens m.me/yourpage?ref=footer-cta, Facebook fires a messaging_referrals event to your Messenger webhook with ref=footer-cta included. This lets you (or your bot framework) attribute the conversation to a specific placement, the homepage hero, the email footer, the printed flyer QR, the Instagram bio link. Without ref tags, you cannot tell where chats started.
Does the pre-filled message work for everyone?
The text parameter (pre-filled message) only works for Facebook Pages classified as business pages and requires Messenger Platform setup on your end. For personal profiles and Pages without a Messenger app configured, the parameter is silently ignored. The chat opens empty. If you need a guaranteed pre-filled message for non-business chat, use WhatsApp (wa.me) or SMS links instead.
Can I use this for my personal Facebook profile?
No, m.me links only work for Facebook Pages, not personal profiles. This is by design: Pages are public business entities, profiles are not. If your business is currently run from a personal profile, create a free Facebook Page (it takes 2 minutes), your m.me link will then work, and you also unlock Page Inbox, automated responses, and analytics.
Will the link open the Messenger app or the browser?
On mobile devices with the Messenger app installed, the link opens the app directly into the chat with your Page, no extra taps. If the app is not installed, the user lands on messenger.com (the mobile web version) and can still send the message after logging in. On desktop, the link opens messenger.com in the browser. Behavior is identical across iOS, Android, Mac, and Windows.
Why am I getting a "Page not found" error on m.me?
Three common causes: (1) the username has a typo, m.me usernames are case-insensitive but otherwise must match exactly; (2) the Page is unpublished or restricted (age-gated, country-locked) so Facebook hides it from m.me; (3) the Page has not yet finished propagating after username change. Open facebook.com/<your-page> in incognito first to confirm the Page is publicly visible, if it is, the m.me link will work.
How is m.me different from a Send Message button on my website?
The Messenger Customer Chat plugin embeds the full chat widget on your site (visitor stays on your page). m.me sends them to Messenger itself (visitor leaves your page but lands in their familiar chat app). The trade-off: the chat plugin keeps people on-site but requires extra JS and Facebook SDK setup; m.me has zero setup, zero JS, and works in every email, SMS, QR, and ad. For most small businesses, m.me converts better because the friction is lower.
Can I track clicks on my m.me link?
Facebook does not give you click counts on m.me URLs. If you shorten the link with Flyn, every click is logged with location, device, referrer, and the source channel, so you can see whether your homepage CTA, Instagram bio, Google My Business, or printed flyer is actually driving conversations. Same destination, separate short links per channel, gives you clean attribution.
Is there a length limit on the pre-filled message?
In practice, keep it under 280 characters. Longer text gets URL-encoded into a huge query string that some link previewers truncate, mobile keyboards cannot fully scroll, and some Messenger versions reject. A short, specific prompt ("Hi! I saw your launch announcement, can you share pricing?") converts better than a wall of pre-typed text anyway.
Will m.me links work in Facebook and Instagram ads?
Yes, Click-to-Messenger ads on Facebook and Instagram use m.me destinations under the hood, and the ref tag passes through automatically so you can attribute the conversation to a specific ad set or creative. For organic posts, m.me works in link previews and the post body. In Instagram bios, paste it directly, Instagram now allows full m.me URLs.
Can I use m.me on WhatsApp, Telegram, or other apps?
No, m.me only opens Messenger (which is Facebook/Meta's app). For WhatsApp use wa.me links (free WhatsApp Link Generator). For Telegram use t.me. For SMS use sms: links. Most businesses end up with two or three chat-channel buttons on their site so the visitor can pick their preferred app, same destination team, multiple inbound channels.

Turn passers-by into real conversations

A Messenger link makes starting a chat one tap. A Flyn link tells you which channel, website, email, Instagram bio, GMB, actually drives the inbound conversation, so you can do more of what works.
